Also, remove the distributor cap and check the terminals on the cap and on the rotor. Use sand paper to clean up the corrosion that is present on the parts. Put the distributor cap back on and recheck for any sparking.
Sep 07, 2019·Over time, the distributor points and rotor develop an insulating black coating which inhibits good spark. Eons ago an owner could simply go to the local dealer or auto parts store and buy a new cap and rotor. Now we have to make do and refurbish what we have. I am curious to know what others have developed to clean without eroding the brass.
I agree with Busted that there is might be a distributor replacement in your future, but if that dust has had the better part of 20 years to accumulate, it might not be anything to urgently worry about. I would just clean it up, do the cap and rotor and then check it again in a couple thousand miles.

If you remove the screw on top of the rotor, you can take out the distributor rotor and reach the distributor shaft as shown in this picture. Clean your distributor with WD40 which you can spray directly on the centrifugal timing advance mechanism. Be careful to the small holes at the bottom of the distributor which will drain the WD40 out.

11 - Carefully Stuff a rag in the hole the distributor came out of. 12 - Do not turn or crank engine while distributor is out. 13 - Do whatever distributor service is needed, or set up points and condenser in a new distributor. 14 - Set rotor button at last observed position. 15 - Remove rag from hole in engine (sorry that should be obvious), grin.
